The Relation between Clauses

There is relation between the meanings of the clauses in a sentence. The relation of the clauses is represented by the grammar from. The reflection of the relation of the meaning is threefold. We will talk about the three aspects of the relation. When the foreign students are learning Chinese, they should know the three kinds of aspects to understand the learning of Chinese. In the qualified Mandarin program, the teachers may tell you the relation between clauses. The understanding of the relation will help to improve the proficiency of Chinese. One not only studies Chinese but also knows about the nature of the sentences.

Today we will mainly discuss the last two aspects. The first aspect is the clauses connected by the conjunctions or adverbs. The case will be analyzed in the next section. Ok, let’s pay our attention to the second aspect. The second type of the meaning is reflected by the referential function or the relational function of the pronouns. For example, the sentence 陈焕生真是无忧无虑,他的精神面貌和去年大不相同了. The second clause of the sentence includes a pronoun他which is referred the person陈焕生in the first clause of the sentence. Thus, the two clauses of the sentences are connected together by the pronoun 他. The sentence can be translated as the following. Chen Huansheng is carefree ad his spirit and appearance are different from those of last year.

We just mentioned an example which the relation of the clauses is reflected by the pronouns. We will take another example. 学校对面是一家小饭馆儿,他常在那儿吃饭. 那儿in the second clause refers the 小饭馆儿 in the first clause. The complete meaning of the sentence is reflected by the relation that 那儿 is referring to 小饭馆儿. The sentence can be translated into the following. There is a small restaurant opposite our school and he often dines there.

When the foreign students are learning Chinese on one-on-one Chinese learning program, the teachers will tell them that the third type of the meaning is reflected by the relation of the forms of the clauses. For example, the sentence 赚了钱打算干什么?打算买一顶簇新的、呱呱叫的帽子. The first clause of the sentence is in the interrogative form while the second clause is in declarative form. The second clause is the reply to the first clause. Thee sentence is connected by the formal connection of the two clauses.
