The Importance of the Water in Feng Shui Culture in Chinese Culture

Zang Shu which was written by Guo Pu has described as “风水之法,得水为上” (It means that the water depends on the fate of the Feng Shui culture.) according to the theory of Feng Shui which is taken the “生气”(producing Qi ) as the immediate goal, there are three pieces of evidence to approve the “得水为上”. It goes as following:

At first, the water can breed and protect it from diversion. The water exists in the world as the state of liquid. And we have mentioned it before that “生气” (producing Qi) comes into being by the transition of the Yin and Yang through the wind, cloud, and rain. It can be conclude like this “行乎地中,而为生气”. Therefore, the Qi can produce the water. On the other hand, the water can accumulate the Qi and protect if from diversion. This comes from the famous book Bo Shan Pian which focuses on the Feng Shui culture in the Chinese culture.

Secondly, the water may help the Qi get together and prevent it from diversion. The Qi can flow with water. Besides, it can stop flowing when comes across the water. It is described in Chinese as “气乘风则散,界水则止”. What’s more, the water and the Qi originate can be transferred in a certain condition. The relationship between the water and Qi can be seen as the blood is thicker than water. On these accounts, the Qi would not diffuse any more if it runs into the water.

Thirdly, the water can be used as the carrier of the Qi. In another word, the Qi will flow following the water. And the book about Feng Shui has a vivid and simple conclusion of it. It records in Chinese as “人之血以气而行,山水之气以水而行”.

According to the theories of “藏风止水(the Qi would be prevent from the wind and it can be stay with water)” and “生气(producing Qi)”, we may realize the what the most livable environment is. The best place to live ought to have the barriers such as the mountain range to protect it from the diffusion by wind. On the other hand, it has to stay with water in order to make use of the water to accumulate the Qi, transfer the Qi and breed the Qi. Apparently, these three functions from the water are more important than the first function from the mountain range. Therefore, it is no wonder that Guo Pu would describe the Feng Shui culture like this : 风水之法,得水为上,藏风次之. In a word, a place surrounded by the mountains and water is the best place to protect the Qi from the wind and accumulate the Qi.

Obviously, we can find the answer to why the concept of Feng Shui culture values the water so much. In fact, it is another way to express that the water is the origin of the life. Besides, the water improves the circulation of the energy in the ecosystem and the medium of mass exchange. On the other hand, the water can clear up the environment and adjust the airflow. And now it has been a common sense for the modern people. It also infers that the theory of “气以水而运” (the Qi is transferred by the water) may be one conclusion of the health care from the experience in the ancient times.

The living environment surrounded by the mountains and water is usually found in the hilly area. And the reason we have given in the former article before. Otherwise, the water has been the main core of the Feng Shui culture in Chinese culture, because there are no mountains at all in the plains and deserts. Therefore, a place without mountains can be regard as a treasure place, while it can not be seen as the treasure place without the water.
