There seems to have been more taboos about the year of a wedding than about the auspicious days. In the Chinese lunar calendar, the 1st day of spring may fall before or after the Spring Festival. If the 1st day of spring is before the Spring Festival of a year and the next first day of spring comes after the next Spring Festival, then the year is regarded as a “year without spring”. In some areas, this kind of year is called a “widow year”.
If a couple got married in this year, the husband might suffer from bad health. Some thought that people should not get married in the year with the same animal sign as their birth year. For example, if a person was born in the year of the rat, he or she would not get married in the year of the rat. A year with two first days of spring was regarded as a good year for the wedding because the Chinese people prefer double figures. However, there were others who would avoid it because two good events coming together might turn into a bad event. On the same basis, some people would avoid holding wedding for a daughter and a son in the same year.
