Heritage Application Work of the Grand Canal

The year of 2012 is an important year to apply for the world heritage for the Grand Canal. Therefore, in order to continue to promote the protection and application work of the Grand Canal, the literature and history committee of the Chinese People‘s Political Consultative Conference processed the one-the-spot investigation to the Beijing section of the canal on the date of June 27th. The vice president of the Chinese People‘s Political Consultative Conference Luo Fuhe attended to the investigation and survey and the symposium.

On the forum about the protection of the Grand Canal and the application for the world heritage, Luo Fuhe stressed that the Grand Canal has different features with that of the cultural heritages like ancient architecture and ancient relics as the living cultural heritage being used. Therefore, the relationship between the living cultural heritages application and development should be dealt with and the relevant departments at all levels along the canal should form the work mechanism of coordination.

In addition, great effort needs to be made to promote the organic cohesion of the cultural protection and the transportation, water conservancy, South-to North water diversion, environmental protection and the urban and rural construction so that to make sure to give full play to all kinds of practical functions of the canal at the same time of dealing with the heritage protection work. The students who volunteer in China should also know the groundwork of the heritage application should be done practically. And the work like the evaluation, display, monitoring and text drafting of the cultural heritage should be processed.

On the forum, Kong Fanzhi, the director general of Beijing Municipal Administration of Cultural Heritage reported the condition of protecting the Grand Canal in Beijing section and the application condition of the world heritage. The relevant main principles of relevant departments also introduced the relevant conditions about the Grand Canal in various aspects. The committee members pointed out in the forum that the protection work and heritage application have made practical achievements, no matter in the river protection or the environmental protection.
