Zhongshan Cemetery is the tomb of Sun Zhongshan, the famous great statesman in modern China. Facing to the south, Zhongshan Cemetery began originally in the spring of 1926 and finished in the summer of 1929. The total area of the cemetery reaches more than 80 thousand square meters. Most overseas students who attend to HSK preparation program in China might have visited there during the process of learning in China. The main architecture includes the memorial archway, tomb passage, and mausoleum gate, the pavilion built over a stone tablet, the sacrificing hall and the coffin chamber.
Seeing from the sky, you can see the Zhongshan Cemetery is just like a free clock lying on the green blanket. The copper statue of Mr. Sun is the top of the clock while the moon shaped square is the arc of the clock top. The dome of the mausoleum in the end of the coffin chamber seems just like a round clock pendulum. When you step into the sacrificing hall, you can see the sitting statue of Zhongshan which is made of marble, the relief around which reflects the revolution events that Mr. Sun involved.
In the eastern and western wall of the sacrificing hall, the writing of the book Jian Guo Da Gang by Sun is engraved in the marble. When moving forward, you can see the dual tomb gate with the characters Hao Qi Chang Cun on the horizontal inscription. The gates are fan-shaped and made up of copper. There are also the inscriptions on the gate, reading the tomb of Mr. Sun Zhongshan.
If you continue to go forward, you will see the round coffin chamber with the diameter of 18 meters and the height of 11 meters. The most central part is the long coffin pit, the upper of which is the white marble statue of Sun while the lower part is the remains of him. If you attend to one-on-one Chinese learning programs, teachers would tell you that the grave is as deep as five meters and sealed with the reinforced concrete.
The architecture style of Sun is the combination of Chinese style and western style. The magnificent the mountain and all kinds of memorial archways, gates, pavilion housing a tablet, sacrificing hall and the grave are connected together through the large area green land and the wide stone footsteps, making it solemn and majestic with profound meaning and memorial function.
