Ethnic minority groups were also particular about dowries. For example, the Miao people’s dowries include a pair of twin bamboo plants, which were covered with red cloth. They were carried to the bridegroom’s home by the bride’s uncle and planed soon after the wedding. It is said that this custom originated from an old legend and symbolized a happy and lasting marriage.
Among the Jino people in Yunnan Province, dowries should include a piece of cloth woven by the bride herself. After the wedding, if she found out that her husband had been unfaithful to her, she should cut the cloth apart and return to her parents’ home to show that the marriage had ended. Therefore, the piece of cloth implied that husband and wife should be faithful to each other. Some other minorities also have the same kind of thing to symbolize love and loyalty.
