When you contact with a Chinese, if it comes to marriage and questions about children, these sorts of inquiries are mainly used for getting to know people better. For Chinese people, being able to talk about one’s family, or martial situation, is a sign of closeness and mutual acceptance between two people. When friends meet in England they might say, “The weather is pretty fair today!” but, in China, this would come across as being arrogant or unapproachable.
Chinese people of different ages don’t always need to be especially tactful or subtle when asking about the family situation. Asking questions point-blank is fine in certain circumstances, such as, a formal situation where the person being asked is happy to divulge the information. Chinese people don’t see these sorts of personal questions as private and they can talk about without being offended or giving offense.
