When you return home to discover that a thief has broken into your house, you may either step aside to let him go before calling for help, or bolt the door to block his way of escape and go on to seize him. With the former strategy you have little hope to catch the thief even if you can later enlist the help of many people. Therefore, if you think yourself capable of dealing with him singlehandedly, or if prompt help is at hand, you may adopt the latter plan to catch the thief on the spot.
