Frequently Asked Questions

Somtimes the tones change. What are the rules for tone changes?

  1. When two 3rd tones are next to each other, the first one changes into the 2nd tone.
  2. When yī is read independently or is at the end of a word, 一(one) is pronounced as yī; when it precedes a 1st, 2nd, or a 3rd tone, 一 is pronounced as yì; when it precedes a 4th tone, 一 is pronounced as yí.
  3. The tone of 不(no) does not change when it stands by itself or precedes a 1st, 2nd, or a 3rd tone, pronounced as bù, but it is pronounced as bú when it precedes a 4th tone.
