Contents of Chinese vocabulary standardization

As we all know, Chinese vocabulary has a really wide scope with rich contents. Generally speaking, the foreigners who learn in a qualified Mandarin program will learn that the contents of vocabulary standardization in Chinese language include four aspects, the first one of which is the standardization of dialectal words.

When mentioning the dialects, it is inevitably to talk about the Mandarin which is based on the dialects in the north China because the students who take part into Mandarin learning course need to be clear about the relationships of words between Mandarin and northern dialect and between Mandarin and other dialects. Even though the Mandarin vocabulary is different from that in northern dialect, it is based on the northern dialect vocabulary. The differences demand the vocabulary to be processed and selected to form than in Mandarin.

In addition, Mandarin needs to absorb some words from other dialects selectively. For some vocabulary with strong regional and local characteristics, the Mandarin should have clear boundary with them. If you attend to HSK preparation program in China, you may know that Mandarin can absorb some words with special meanings and strong expressive force in dialects because there are no such words in Mandarin.

The second important content of the standardization of vocabulary is the loan word. With the development of globalization, the international exchange is getting more frequently, making great influence to language. There are many loan words in Chinese language. Therefore, the loan words are listed as the item for standardization.

Another important Chinese vocabulary normalization that the students who learn Chinese language should know is the archaism. The Chinese language in ancient times was rich in contents but some of them are out of fashion and are no longer used today. Therefore, the Mandarin needs to select the ancient vocabulary with strong expressive force and adapt to the situations in modern society like 逝世and不亦乐乎.

After talking about the ancient words, we need also pay attention to the new words in Chinese. With the development of society, new words are created to meet the needs of the communication. However, you should know only the new words recognized and accepted by the general public can be absorbed into Mandarin. The words created willingly and have no actual meanings can be called the new words.
