The most authentic Chinese words and phrases: 桃(táo)

In the Chinese language, “桃(táo)” refers to “peach”. It is formed with the part “木” and “兆”, the first part “木” means “tree or wood”. So almost anything made of wood has that part to connote its meaning. And if we put “桃(táo)” and “李(lǐ)” (plum) together, “桃李” doesn’t simply represent the two fruits, actually it means one’s pupils and disciples.

Chinese would like to compare the teachers as “gardeners”, and the students as the flowers, fruits in the garden. “桃花táo huā” means “the peach flowers”, but if we add a “运yùn” (fortune, luck), we get a very Chinese phrase, “桃花运” , which means “good luck with adventures with women”. Two familiar Chinese may talk with each other like, “Have you made any 桃花运 recently?” or “I have a very good 桃花运 recently.”
