The White Horse Temple in Kunming

The White Horse Temple is located near the crossroads of Xi Yuan Road and Xin Wen Road in Kunming. The temple was built hundreds of years ago, and there are many people go to the place and pray for peace every day.

A folk tale about the White Horse Temple should be an interesting subject in your Mandarin classes when you learn to speak Chinese in Mandarin Chinese classes in Yunnan province. The story happened hundreds of years ago. With the sound of gongs one day morning, eight servants and two men on horses appeared on the road. The servants were walking in the front with every four of them on each side of the street; two men sitting on two horses were in the middle of the ream.

A few hours later, they got to the local county government of Kunming. Zhi Tai and Ti Tai got off their horses and went into the county Yamen to inspect the work of county magistrate’s, and their horses were tied in the horse barn by horsemen.

Two hours later, the county magistrate, Zhi Tai and Ti Tai came out of the county Yamen of Kunming and waited horsemen to bring out the horses. Zhi Tai and Ti Tai looked angrily at the county magistrate, and it seemed that they were blaming the county magistrate.

Finally the white horse was found in a temple built in Song Dynasty, and it was standing near a Bodhisattva statues.

Hearing all these, Zhi Tai went eastwards to find his yellow horse, but when he got to the temple, he found nothing but a horse painting on the wall. Zhi Tai thought as long as his horse was yellow and it stopped at the foot of East Mountain, the mountain should be named as Jin Ma Mountain. The temple that the yellow horse went was called as the Jin Ma Temple you knew when you came to study Chinese in Kunming.

Ti Tai went westwards to find the white horse, and he found his horse standing right beside the Bodhisattva statues. He tried to pull it home, but the horse did not move an inch. Ti Tai gave up trying. As the horse went to this turquoise mountain and stopped, he gave the name of Bi Ji Mountain to it as the mountain looked like a rooster. He also ordered to build a temple to memorize his horse, and the temple was named the White Horse Temple. It is the Bai Ma Temple you go when you learn Mandarin in Yunnan province.
