Lesson 27 – Elementary – How to Distinguish 难免and 难免不 ?

When foreign students are taking one-on-one Chinese learning programs in China, the teachers may distinguish some phrases to make the students know more about the grammar points. today we are going to learn the differences between 难免and 难免不.

The word 难免 is used to refer to some certain reason to avoid some certain calamity. For example, one can make the sentence like 不注意学习新知识,就难免在新时代的竞争中被淘汰. The literal meaning of sentence is people will be replaced in the new era if one does not learn new knowledge. Sometimes, people will say 难免不. Though added a negative word不, the meaning of the word 难免and 难免不is similar to each other. We will give some examples to distinguish the words难免and 难免不. The two sentences are工作作风粗枝大叶,难免出漏洞 and工作作风粗枝大叶,难免不出漏洞. The meaning of the two sentences is similar. The two sentences all indicate the meaning that there are potential dangers of the work. Another pair of examples will be given. The pair is新来的年轻同志,由于经验不足,难免出现点儿差错and新来的年轻同志,由于经验不足,难免不出现点儿差错. The literal meaning of the sentences all refer to the new comers may make mistakes for they lack experience. The meaning of the two sentences is that the new comers may make some certain mistake.

In oral Chinese, people will often use 好and 好不 which have the same meaning as well. For example, the phrases like好热闹,好开心,好痛快,好漂亮,好威风 and 好伤心 have the same meaning to the phrases like the following好不热闹,好不开心,好不痛快,好不漂亮,好不威风,好不伤心. The phrases of the two sentences have different expressions but have same meaning which indicates the affirmation to some certain state. But the phrases 好容易and 好不容易 indicate negative meaning, which is different from the above examples. For example, the sentences我好容易把他请来了,你又变卦了and我好不容易把他请来了,你又变卦了 have negative meaning. They all indicate that it is not easy to invite him. The students who are preparing HSKpreparation program in China may be a little confused at the circumstance and they should pay more attention to the circumstance.

In oral Chinese, we often say 差点儿and 差点儿没 to express the idea that the things which is unexpected is not realized. The meaning of the two phrases is the same. For example, 他在台阶上差点儿摔倒 and 他在台阶上差点儿没摔倒 indicate to the same meaning that he seldom tumbles down on the steps. Though one phrase is in positive form and the other in negative form, they all indicate the meaning that the tumbling des not occur.
