Lesson 23 – Elementary – Understanding the Meanings and Application of 来 and 去

During the period of Chinese language learning, many overseas students often feel confused with the application of 来and去. As a result, the misuse of these two words causes a lot of funny things in daily conversations. As a matter of fact, both 来and去all have many levels of meanings because they can be used in many situations. However, the first and the most important meaning the foreign students need to master when they attend to volunteer programs in China are about the action. Both words are similar with l “come” and “go” in English.

After understanding the meanings of both words, the students are supposed to fill 来or去accordingly in the blanks in the following sentences. The first one is 他刚从我这儿过(), which carries the meaning that he just went away from here. From the level of meaning, we can see obviously that it should be filled with 去. You can also say我看见他刚进图书馆去了.

In addition, when you attend to summer program in China for Chinese learning, teachers would help you to distinguish the application by telling you the direction of the action of both words. When we use 来, the action is processed from the other side and toward the speaker. For example, 你进来的时候,看见我的书了没有. On the contrary, when the act is processed toward the hearer or some other places, we should use去like 他到超市买东西去了.

Here is a dialogue to practice the application of both words. A:你爸爸回()了吗?B:还没有呢。他到书店买书()了. A asks whether the father comes back or not, which is to say the action of coming back towards the speaker, hence filling 来. In the answer of B, it implies the father goes to the book store, indicating the action towards other place. Therefore, it should be 去. At the same time, some students can use them in proper context after understand the meaning. But they usually put them in wrong places. For example, the sentence 他下星期就回去美国了is incorrect, which should be 他下星期就回美国去了.
