Learning Several Polite Formulas in Chinese like 先走一步

If you often talk to Chinese people when you attend to Chinese school to study Mandarin, you may often hear Chinese friends speak some expressions to show respect or politeness. For example, the polite formula 先走一步is used when the speaker wants to leave earlier than the other party. Sometimes it is used when the speaker can’t go together with the other party and therefore asks the other party to leave first. You can say你们在这儿聊着,我先走一步,下午两点咱们在会议室见.

Another frequently used pattern for expressing politeness is the polite formula 献丑, which carries the meaning that the speaker thinks he is not capable enough then he asks others not to laugh at him. Usually, it is a word of modesty used on the occasion of performance or writing. For instance, 甲:刚才高师傅表演了高超的厨艺,真让我们大开眼界。乙:献丑了.

Saying thank you is not the only way to express the gratitude. You may often see the phrase 辛苦了when you learn Chinese online free. Function as a polite formula, it is used to comfort or extend gratitude. Accordingly, you can say 稿子你都翻译完了,辛苦了!In some cases, the objects can be added after the word 辛苦 such as 辛苦您了.

In the same way, 让您费心了is applied to extend gratitude to the other party because the other party spent a lot of energy in helping the speaker. For instance, 甲:这件事你放心吧,我会帮你向校长反映的。乙:让您费心了. Of course, sometimes 让can be omitted like王老师,我的孩子上课不太专心,您费心了. Students who study in China should know it also can be 让您受累了to show the gratitude for spending much energy in helping. With the same form, we often say让您破费了, implying to extend gratitude because the other party spent some money for the speaker.
