The reduplication of the adjectives is the common form which the foreign students will confront. The reduplication forms of the adjectives are various and there are many different kinds of reduplication forms. When the foreign students learn Chinese in China, they may make different kinds of mistakes in the learning process of adjectives. Different kinds of students in different levels will make different kinds of mistakes. Now let’s see some common errors made by the students to avoid the re-occurrence of the adjectives.

There are two kinds of reduplication forms of the two-syllable adjectives which include the form AABB and form ABAB. When the adjectives use the reduplication form of AABB, the phrase is used as an adjective. When the adjectives use the form of ABAB, the phrase is used as a verb. For example, the sentence 他们高高兴兴地走了进去( they went in happily) applies the reduplication form of AABB. Thus, the phrase 高高兴兴is used to modify the state of the people. The sentence 别难过了,砸门也跳舞去,也高兴高兴 applies the reduplication form of ABAB. Thus, the phrase 高兴高兴 (to have some fun) is used as a verb. There are not many adjectives of this kind. The common-seen adjectives like this kind are 高兴,痛快,舒服,轻松,亲热,安静,漂亮,干净 and 快活. So when foreign students are learning Mandarin Chinese in China, they should pay attention to this kind of adjectives.

Another problem the foreign students may counter is that the word 干净can not be reduplicated into干里干净. The foreign students may know that the adjective 糊涂 bewildered can be reduplicated into the form 糊里糊涂. The reduplication form of the adjectives of this kind belongs to A里AB. Beside the original word 糊涂, many other adjectives like 啰嗦,小气,慌张,邋遢,土气,傻气,女气and 流气 can be applied into the reduplication form of A里AB. The words like啰嗦,小气and 糊涂 indicate the negative meaning and the reduplication form contains the tone of contempt and detest. But the words like 干净and 漂亮 refer to positive meaning and can not be applied into the reduplication form A里AB. Thus, the word 干净can not be applied into the combination like 干里干净. But the foreign students can say such expression like 干干净净.

When the foreign students learn the reduplication forms of the adjectives, they should distinguish the different kinds of words and set them into different reduplication forms.
