Chinese Words and Sentences Recalling Methods

When we learn a certain language, we often fail to remember the just learned words for a very long time. It is the same for those students who learn Chinese in China. This lesson will help students to recall the words they have learned.

The first method is to recall by picture and cards. If you go to school to study Mandarin, teachers will first provide students a picture or card that closely related with the teaching contents. According to materials provided, students should recall the knowledge they have learned before with imagination, and then speak any relative words, sentences or situations.

Let me illustrate an example to show how to learn Mandarin by this way. After learning the lesson “课文”, teacher shows a picture with chopsticks or some related contents to students. With the guidance of the teacher, students may be able to remember the words or sentences learned before like “地道、夹、利落、强、瞅、好处、他夹得很利落、用筷子有很多好处”.

Besides, teacher can also ask students to answer questions according to the given words and grammatical rules. This is also a popular method in Chinese language school. Teacher should raise questions in accordance with the supposed situations and students’ conditions. Then students should answer questions accordingly.

For example, the teacher can limit the word “大都” to answer the question “那个班男同学多还是女同学多?”, “兴趣” to “溺爱打篮球吗?”, “不如” to “他的汉语怎么样” and “了解” to “那个学校怎么样?”. The purpose to teach Mandarin language is to help students to think about the meaning and usage, cultivating the capability of answering questions with accurate words.

There is a simple but efficient method that used in many Mandarin learning courses, that is, to replace words repeatedly. The teacher writes down one sentence based on the grammar or word that have learned and then underlies the parts need to be replaced. Students should imitate the example to make new sentences by replacing some words.

Let’s take some examples to explain it more specific because illustration is the best choice to learn Chinese language. On the basis of the sentence pattern” 越……越……”, the teacher examples “她越长越漂亮了”,and students may replace the underlying parts like “雨越下越大了”, “你越说越地道”, “汉语越学越难”, etc. By this way, the mechanical practice and practical practice are combined perfectly.

Another example often illustrated when students study Mandarin in Yunnan is the pattern “……了没有?”. It is easier to imitate the simple sentence “你报名了没有?” like “你做作业了没有?”, “你复习了没有?” and “你吃饭了没有?”. Students can practice over and over again until they are very proficient.

We can also use the way of questioning to consolidate the important teaching contents, which is a very helpful methods to study Chinese. Teacher raises questions related to the key points for students. As they are important, teacher should continue to ask the others.

For example, “对……感兴趣” is a very typical case used to teach Chinese because students often speak it as “感兴趣…… “ when they having class to study in China. So students should demand more students to answer with this sentence repeatedly to form a deep impression.

师:你对什么感兴趣?
生1:我对书法感兴趣。
师:山本(生1)对什么感兴趣?
生2:他对书法感兴趣。
师:山本对什么感兴趣?
生3:山本对书法感兴趣。
……

The feature of this questioning way is that the teacher’s emphasis is replaced by students’ repeated answers, thus to highlight the point to form a deep impression. Meanwhile, teacher does not make comment on the answers, so it will improve students’ resolving ability. It is a perfect way to learn Mandarin.

All of these methods are beneficial to help students to recall the important teaching contents learned before. So they can be frequently used.
