Last week, one Keats teacher recommended a great Yunnan food restaurant, Grandmother’s Taste. Here at this restaurant, you can find the best Yunnan cuisine with the lowest prices. The most important is that you can’t find gourmet powder in all the food served. Many people care about their health and refuse to have food with gourmet powder. At Keats cafeteria, we also do not use gourmet powder, so you can rest assured that you can find safe food at Keats. The group dinner at the Grandmother’s Taste can greatly help our students learn about Yunnan food culture.
Once entering the gate of the restaurant, we were immediately attracted by the special decorations of the restaurant. Many cooking tools that are only used in Yunnan were hanged on the wall. The teachers introduced the tools to the students by pointing at the pictures on the wall. You can easily see an old lady in the picture, farming and cooking. That’s why this restaurant is called “Grandmother’s Taste”. The waiter led us to a clean and bright dining area. The students started to practice to read the menu and they surprisingly found that they can recognize many characters. Excitedly chatting with the waiter, the students really enjoyed the way they spoke Chinese. However, they did not realize that Keats teachers have already ordered all the must-eat dishes, waiting for the students to come.
Soon, a table full of tasty and colorful food was in front of the students. Many students did not have the chance to try these food but tried them here: Spicy lotus root, Smash potato, Spicy pork with vegetables, Buckwheat cake, Boil bamboo shoots, Stew donkey meat, Yunnan style snail meat, and so on. Spicy, sweet, and sour, the dinner at Grandmother’s Taste gave Keats students a clearer understanding of Yunnan food.
Lastly, Keats teachers invited our students to evaluate the food they had. The speech was given in Chinese and they exchanged their ideas in Chinese as well. All the dishes were so wonderful that they couldn’t choose the best. Other than the Cross-bridge Rice Noodles, Keats students learned that there are still so many great food out there waiting for them to explore.
