The Simplification of Chinese characters

Because of the long history of Chinese characters, the vast territory in which they were used, and the large population of people using them, the numbers of books and records written in Chinese continued to grow. Also, for various reasons related to engraving, typesetting and proofreading, Chinese characters developed into what seemed like a state of disorder: there are many characters; many variant characters and some characters have too many strokes.

Chinese characters became difficult to learn, recognize, write and use. This led to the need to simplify the characters. This simplification included a reduction in the numbers of strokes and the number of characters. Actually, the simplification of characters appeared in virtually every historical period.

The modern simplification began in the early 20th century. In 1964, China’s State of Council issued the “Table of Simplified Chinese Characters”. It brought great convenience to the lives, study and work. Now, the Chinese mainland follows a system of character standardization.

In China’s Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, traditional characters are still in use.
