Lesson 24 – Elementary – Complement of Result with 在、着、好 and 成

When learning the complement of result, it is important for the foreign language learners to know the application of 在、着、好 and 成in the complement of result. It is an important grammar point for those who just begin to learn Chinese online free because it is frequently used in the daily conversations. Among so many forms in the complement of result, the structures with the four characters 在、着、好and成 are very basic points for the learners to learn.

First of all, the structure verb + 在 is applied to indicate the location or position to which someone or something is placed through an act like 我的词典你放在哪儿了. Usually speaking, the object of this structure is a word denoting place. Let’s take the following dialogue as an example. A:我的护照你放哪儿了?B:就放在你的口袋里了.

Let’s move our attention to the structure verb + 着, in which 着should be articulated as “zhao”. This construct indicates that an act has fulfilled its purpose or has some kind of results. A good example should be 你要的那本书我给你买着了, which carries the meaning that the book he wants to but was bought. One sentence you often hear might be 你睡着了吗?

When you attend to HSK Preparation Program in China for Chinese language learning, the teachers would also explain the structure verb + 好when they teach grammar point. For this point, it is applied to indicate that an act has been finished to a satisfying degree. If you intend to express the meaning of finishing washing your clothes, you can make sentence like 我的衣服洗好了. You can also make sentences like昨天晚上我没有睡好.

The last but not least one you should know is the construct verb + 成 of the complement of result, which is applied to imply the completion of an act, something is done, changed or unexpected outcomes are brought about by an action. When you say这篇故事他翻译成了英语, it means the story has been translated into English.
