The Hezhe Nationality: Religion and belief

Hezhes, with Shamanism as their belief, believe that everything has its mystical powers and that the world and the heavenly bodies, though controlled by gods, each have its soul. Hezhes make sacrificial offerings to varieties of gods for their blessing. Shamanism, as a kind of culture, has played an important role in many aspects of the Hezhe life, such as expelling epidemic diseases, divination, reviving the spirit, praying for a son and exorcism. In addition to Shaman gowns, caps, gloves and shoes, Shamans are equipped with waist bells, Shaman drum, bronze mirror, drumsticks, Shaman knife and stick. They think a man has three souls: the 1st soul called “Aoren”, leaves the body at death, the 2nd soul called “Harney”, so-called soul of thought, may leave the human body temporarily, and have relations with other souls; and the 3rd soul called “Fayangku”, namely incarnated soul, leaves the body at death but has power to reincarnate.

Hezhes adorn Heaven very much and they often have the bottom of a “sacred tree”, which is of strange shape or its struck by lightning to resemble a human face, to be consecrated for memorial services. Some people build a small temple and consecrate a statue as deity. Hezhes worship the fire, and invoke the God of Fire “Fojia Mama”, and the fire-using god “Dure Marin”. They also offer sacrifices to the God of wind, the God of Water and the God of Mountain. They invoke all the gods for their blessing that they may return home safe with a full load when they go out hunting or fishing.
