the Father of Chinese Rock

Cui Jian is known as “the Father of Chinese Rock.” He was born in Beijjing in 1961, and during the 80s he skyrocketed to musical fame in army camouflage and a red bandana. He wrote and performed such songs as “Nothing to my name”, “Rock and Roll on the new long march” and “Let me be wild in the Snow”.

Cui Jian has a distinctive musical style which gives voice to the rebellious spirit and independent mindset of the younger generation. He once said, “The measure of a nation’s development and liberalization is, whether or not, it permits criticism. If it doesn’t even allow artists to voice criticism, who will be allowed to do so? ”

Cui Jian thinks rock and roll is a lot like Erguotou, favored liquor among Beijingers: it’s simple, pure and strong. Someone commented on the Internet, “This year the generation that loves Cui Jian has become middle-aged, perhaps they are cautious in behavior, but Cui Jian will always be in their blood, forever marching towards freedom and never surrendering.”
