The pause in one sentence often occurs in the junction of the word between words. But the pause can not be in accordance to the structure of the sentence. If we talk about the subject-predicate sentence, there should be a pause after the subject. But there is exception as well. The pause can occur in somewhere after the predicate. For example, the sentence 他最喜欢吃冰糖葫芦 can be changed into different structures. The pause methods can be as the following three ways. The first is 他啊，最喜欢吃冰糖葫芦. The second was is the 他最喜欢啊,吃冰糖葫芦. The third way of the pause is 他啊，最喜欢啊，吃冰糖葫芦. But the pause can not occur after the word 最 and 吃. This kind of pause can not emerge in this condition.

So, what is the function of the modal particles? Some students may ask when they learn Chinese language in China. There are two roles of the modal particles of the pause in the sentence. The first role is the mark for the pause. The second role is to express some certain tone. In the following paragraphs, the two roles will be divided into three points to illustrate the functions of the pause.

The first point is the words 啊and 了 are used after the coordinate components to refer to enumeration. For example, the sentence is 什么栗子啊、核桃啊、柿子啊，我们这儿都不缺. One can see that the pause comes after the paralleling components of 栗子chestnut, 核桃nut and 柿子persimmon. The function of the modal particles is the illustration of the things that we do not lack.

The second point the words like 啊、嚜、吧and 呢 are used after the pause to draw attention from the listeners. For example, in the sentence 提起这个人啊，可是大大有名. The word 啊 is used to express suspend and draw attention from the listener. The word 啊is of great power and energy. In the sentence 这个人嚜，我倒是见过. The word 嚜 contains the meaning of as far as. Thus, the sentence can be translated into as far as this person, I have met him before. The words 呢and 嚜are almost the same and the word 呢has the sense of antithesis. The word 吧had the meaning to make examples. The function may be hard to remember for those who are learning Mandarin. But if efforts are put, progress will be made. The third point is the words like 啊，呢and 吧are used after the clause which refer to assumption.
