Practice Oral Chinese by Describing, Telling Story and Asking and Answering Questions

If we want to learn a certain language well, we should put it into use. During the process of using, we can learn more and our language skills can be improved. Therefore, for those students who learn Chinese in China, it is important to practice their oral Chinese language.

It is essential for us to listen carefully and correctly before we speak in our daily conversation. To practice learners oral Chinese when they study in China, here is an interesting method designed for training in class. Teacher writes down some instructions on the papers, then one student acts according to the instructions and the others close their eyes and listen carefully.

During the process, the other students just listen and keep silent when the student acts for the first time. At the second time, they should guess and speak out what the student is doing, every detail is needed. Here are some sentences as reference for those who learn Mandarin: “正在走向讲台”, “正在黑板上写字”, “打开电风扇”, “在开门”, “出去了”, etc. Then the student will act for one more time and the others check whether they guess correctly or not.

The student who does the action should make it more exaggerate so that the other students can hear it clearly. To diversify the methods for learners to train when they study Chinese, we can do some changes. We can play the game by dividing the class into groups or we can record a series of sound in the recorder and play for students to guess.

Another way to practice oral Chinese is to tell story in turn with given topics and conjunctive words. Teacher prepares some topics and conjunctive words in advance before the class is divided into two groups. One student picks one topic and three conjunctive words and gives them to the partners. To learn Mandarin Chinese effectively, each student speaks one sentence to make up a story after discussion.

During the process of telling story in this way to learn Chinese, if each student has said one sentence but the story hasn’t finished, they can continue for the first student again. The one who has conjunctive word should apply it to the sentence. When finished, another group of students play it with the same way.

The story may be not so reasonable and connective, but it should have a beginning and ending. For instance, when they study Mandarin Chinese, if they meet the topic “买票” and conjunctive words “但是、只有、既然”, they can do like this: “听说昆明很漂亮,我想去那儿玩——我来到火车站买票,但卖票人不在——我没办法,只好在车站里等——半小时后,售票员来了,我问他有没有去昆明的票——他说没有白天的了,要买白天的明天再来——既然我决定去玩,白天晚上都没关系——只有去了昆明我才高兴,所以买了晚上的票。

Another effective way of practicing oral Chinese is to ask questions to each other and answer, which is very helpful but seldom used in the one-on-one Chinese learning programs. Teacher can organize this game after finishing teaching one lesson. After being divided into two groups, each member of one group asks relevant questions to one member of another group. If the student not satisfied with the answers, he can ask the other continue to answer.

During the process of playing this game, teacher should play the role of a director. It would be better if students have some arguments about some questions in Chinese learning programs. It will be helpful for students to talk about a certain topic and practice their oral Chinese.

In order to ensure every student get the opportunity to practice, we can change the way of asking and answering questions into the circulatory way. They may know it if they often learn Chinese online free. Three groups are needed for this game. Team B answer the questions of team A, team B asks questions to team C and then team C asks to team A.

If Chinese language learners can practice their oral Chinese by following the methods mentioned above, their language skills will be improved a lot.
