Jin Ma means a golden horse, and Bi Ji refers to a blue rooster. Long long ago, Kunming was a place where there was no tree or water. It was totally a wasteland. One day, when the sun rose, a huge and strong golden horse jumped out from the cloud and landed on Kunming. Wherever the golden horse went and touched, golden grass and trees came out from soil. And then different animal came. At that certain night, a blue rooster appeared in Kunming from the moon. When the blue rooster winged his wings, jades and pearls fell, which formed a sea for shrimps and fishes.
For students who study abroad in China, they will find the golden horse pronounced as Jin Ma, and the blue rooster is Bi Ji. After Jin Ma and Bi Ji came, Kunming was changed into a beautiful place. Jin Ma said he wanted to go around seeing if there was any place more beautiful than Kunming, so he did. However, a king was attracted by Jin Ma and ordered his chancellor to seize Jin Ma. Having not noticed how evil the human beings were, Jin Ma was caught by them. Jin Ma was unhappy because of missing Bi Ji, and the chancellor suggested the king to catch Bi Ji so that Jin Ma and Bi Ji could be together. But Jin Ma escaped immediately he saw Bi Ji. The king told all three of his princes that if any of them could get Jin Ma and Bi Ji back, he would be he next of king. If not, they did not need to come back to the kingdom.
The first prince thought Jin Ma and Bi Ji would be hungry and looking for fruits to eat, so he waited and waited near those fruits and finally turned into a big rock. The second prince believed Jin Ma and Bi Ji would come to drink, so he hid near the drinking pond and finally changed into another big rock. The third prince was king’s beloved little son, and the king offered him some help. The king told his son that he could pretend to be a beggar and hid his army around. When Jin Ma and Bi Ji met the prince, they took pity on him and finally were ambushed by his army.
Bi Ji figured out what was happening, and flied away before the silver net came to him. However, Jin Ma was not that fortunate and he was caught in the net. Bi Ji watched what was happening to Jin Ma, but he could do nothing for help. Suddenly, Jin Ma ran away and the prince chased after the horse. At last, the third prince seized Jin Ma. Soon after his being caught, Jin Ma disappeared and a horse-shaped mountain flied down. The third prince and his army were shelved under the mountain. Since that, the mountain was called the golden horse mountain, and it was Jin Ma Shan in Mandarin.
Seeing all these, Bi Ji felt so disappointed that he wanted to fly to the mountain and be with Jin Ma. However, two of the directions were guarded by the first and second princes, so Bi Ji’s only choice was flying westward, where there was no guard. After seven days’ flight, Bi Ji changed into another mountain, which was the blue rooster mountain, and Bi Ji Shan in Mandarin.
Those two mountains brought blessing to Kunming, and in order to honor them, the local government built two memorial archways that named after Jin Ma and Bi Ji. When you come to study abroad in China, Jin Ma and Bi Ji archways are the place you should never miss.
