Mandarin Reading Skill of Semantic Predication

Prediction is a very important skill in reading Chinese materials and also a crucial means to improve the reading efficiency. It means to guess what will happen in the following parts on the basis of the information you have mastered. If you master this skill when you learn Chinese, there is no need for you to read the Chinese materials word by word. For some sentence, you can guess the meaning of the next part as long as you see the first part if you master this skill in reading.

There are many levels in the application of the predication method. In the following parts, the semantic predication will be introduced which is to predict in accordance with semantic system. In reading process, the learners often do some predication unconsciously to the reading unread according to the meaning of the part they read and also some knowledge in their minds. Since all things in the world have university, there is no need for us to know the result of things by experiencing them ourselves.

For example, if we go to the shop, we usually go for shopping and go to the restaurants for eating. According to the knowledge of such type, the experienced readers can produce a kind of prediction to the contents will be read and then prove it in the reading process. When you attend to one-on-one Mandarin learning programs, teachers would tell you that this process will deepen the understanding to the reading materials so that the readers can pay much attention to the overall understanding of the sentences and even the article.

In addition, some Chinese language learners also often predict the contents of the article from the titles or the structures of the essays in reading process, which is also a method making full use of the university. The titles of most articles always clearly imply the contents of the articles. For those essays, you can know what they are about as long as you see the titles, and even for further predication on the specific contents.

It is because the knowledge you have acquired and stored in your mind will be activated to connect with the new knowledge. Except for the titles, the articles usually have some structural features. For example, the structure of news is usually title, introduction, main parts and ending. In the main parts, the factors are usually time, place, persons, events, causes, process and results.
