Lesson 26 – Intermediate – Understanding of Language Points尤其 And 一…也不(没)

Some language grammar in the process of learning Chinese may seem difficult to teach at the first place. But after several times of practice and acquisition of examples, the separate word or phrase can be used to apply them into the practical sentence. The language grammar is an abstract concept and the acquisition is realized through the practice of examples and assignments related to the grammar that has been studied.

Let’s take 尤其 as an example. The word 尤其 is used to express the further meaning after the comparison of two objects. It has conveyed the meaning of 特别 which means especially. The students who study Mandarin Chinese may be told that the word is often followed by 是. One sentence will help to grasp the usage of the word. 这份报纸上广告很多,尤其是电脑的广告. The meaning of the sentence is that there are a lot of ads on the newspaper especially the ads about the computers. The sentence firstly compares the general ads and the computer ads on the newspaper. Then it comes to a conclusion that there is much more computer ads and most information is about the computer. The focus of the sentence is the latter part.

Another example will help to understand the grammar point well. 跑步,尤其是慢跑,对身体很好. 尤其is used to make the point right that jogging is better for health than the general running. The sentence can be translated like this-Running, especially jogging, is good for health. The assignments related to the above point are to introduce your hobbies with 尤其. For example, 我很喜欢音乐,尤其是现代音乐( I like music especially modern music.).

Wherever you take Mandarin language courses in China, the teachers will introduce one phrase that is used to emphasize. The phrase is一…也不(没).The phrase is used in negative sentence and is used for emphasis. Sometimes it can express the implication of overstatement. One example will be needed to understand the usage of the phrase. 分班考试的时候,填汉字一个也没写对. The meaning of the sentence is that no single Chinese character is right in the placement test. The phrase is used to emphasize that there are many mistakes in the Chinese test. the phrase一…也不(没)is used to stress there is no single right word in the test. Another example will help to understand the point well. The sentence is 小王和老板吵架的时候,别人一句话也不说.
