Lesson 19 – Advanced – Learning Chinese Words 并非, 偶然and 懒得in Reading

We say reading is a good way to improve Chinese language skill because the Chinese language learners can learn some important language points during the process of practicing reading. And most students got the benefits from the reading practice. For example, the following dialogue is provided for the students who study in China to complete with the given words. A:他的书写得幽默风趣,他在生活中也是个开朗活泼的人吧. B: ,他平时少言寡语的. (并非)

First of all, the students should know the meaning of 并非, which is used to negate certain thing or statement. The sentence A mentions that he is “开朗活泼” while B says he speak less in daily life. Accordingly, when the students complete this dialogue with 并非, the possible answer is 他并非开朗活泼的人. Accordingly, you can make sentence like经理并非不信任你,他觉得这个工作不适合你.

In addition, when you are reading Chinese books, you may often see the word偶然 which is applied to mean to do something by chance. To respond the sentence 这家小店位于胡同的最里面,你是怎么发现它的with the word 偶然, the students who learn Mandarin in China can say 我是偶然发现的 because the former sentence ask the way of finding the shop. In the same sense, you can make sentences like 我去买这本书的时候偶然发现了我需要的文章.

The sentences with the word 懒得are heard in daily conversations. Of course, it is also often seen in reading materials. For instance, if the foreign students who study in Chinese language program in China are supposed to answer the question 中午了,我们做点儿饭还是出去吃with 懒得, you can say 我懒得做饭,我们出去吃吧because 懒得carries the meaning of not being in the mood to do something.
