The Naming methods in China

Each Chinese has a unique name. The naming methods can be generalized in this way. The 1st one is the situational method, which is to name a baby according to the signs around its birth, parents feeling and the situation of the birth. Confucius named his son Kong Li (Li means carp in Chinese) because Duke Zhao of Lu sent a carp as the birth gift. Another type is hope-expressing, which means resting parents’ hopes upon the name. The 3rd kind is ambition-oriented, and most of those names are chosen by the person himself. The famous movie star—Jacky Chen (Cheng Long in Chinese) gave himself the name (Be a dragon) after he enters people’s sight. His real name is not that. Chinese people often give boys such names as “Yong” (brave), “Qiang” (stong), “Gang”(firm). And give girls “Li” (beautiful), “Yu”(rain), “Hong”(red) etc. There are five or six thousand surnames in China; the frequently used are only a few hundred, especially surnames like “Zhang”, “Wang”, “Li” and so on.
