Words Standard is Important to Cultural Transmission

As we know, there are many nonstandard Chinese words appear in our life recently, both in oral form and written form. Many foreigners who learn Chinese in China fail to understand those words. A certain language reflects the relevant culture. Therefore, this phenomenon remind us of paying more attention to standardize the usage of Chinese language, thus protecting our traditional culture continue to transmit.

In order to solve this problem, relevant measures should be taken. The Singapore Lianhe Zaobao ever published article pointing out that we should standardize and organize Chinese language words and grammars at the same time of creating new characters and new words. What’s more, teachers should attach more importance to students’ pronunciation and words application when they teach Mandarin language. This will be helpful in Chinese language standardization.

In this article, it emphasized the importance of standardizing the language using environment. It is not only helpful to promote people’s ability to use Chinese language, but also beneficial to gain a deep understanding the transmission of Chinese language and Chinese culture. For those foreigners who study Chinese, it will gain the sense of identity of Chinese language by this way.

There were some examples and nonstandard phenomena mentioned in that article. Those who learn Mandarin in China may be told that many advertisements of promoting Chinese language speaking can be seen on the notice boards of the bus stations, subway station and universities and colleges. The Chinese words on the notice boards are interesting and rich in contents. For example, the character “囧” is not often seen in our daily life.

We often hear people say that the production of words is on the basis of the appearance of language. In Singapore, the Chinese language used by the local people is often mixed with dialects as well as English. It increases our knowledge about the new words. The character “酷” is a typical one. It didn’t carry the meaning of “个性爽朗(the characteristic is open and straight )”. However, students in Mandarin learning courses will know it attaches that meaning after transliterating the English word “cool”.

Many nonstandard words such as “锁匙”, “看有” and “看没有” can be heard frequently in Singapore. It is the same to say the Chinese “小的桶” and “漱口杯” as the character “共” in Hokkien. What’s more, in recent time, many young people prefer to say “这样” as “酱”. Some foreigners who study in China may feel it is understandable. When people send messages by cell phone in Chinese, they combine the pronunciation of the characters “这” and “样” into “酱” for the convenience of spelling.

If all of those nonstandard phenomena happen in the spoken language and the network language, it might be understandable. But it is not good for students in Chinese language school to use those acronyms in their compositions. Even though we want it to be simplified, we don’t allow students to use Chinese characters wrongly.

Of course, some of the local language can’t be written with the form of Chinese language. Here are two examples provided to those who learn Chinese language. They use “pomp pomep” to express to take a shower and “shih shih” for piss. Besides, many words originated from Malay language, English and dialects have no record form in Chinese.

For those words have no written form of Chinese language, we can’t just find one arbitrary word to take that place. Only those conventional words like “酷” can we apply to the written form. Most teachers in Mandarin language courses in China think that one local organization should be established to standardize the language application.

The most important thing is to demand students learn and use Chinese in standard form when they attend toschool to study Mandarin. In this process, Chinese teachers take the most responsibility of standardizing students’ listening, speaking, reading and writing, thus improving their Chinese language skills.

All in all, people should demand themselves to use language normally. Teachers in language school should educate students in language standardization. Only in a normal language environment can we know more about the Chinese language and Chinese culture.
