Why It Is Incorrect to Say 从朋友借钱?

In Chinese language, it is not correct to say 从朋友借钱, the reason of which is related to the locative nouns. From the name, we can see the locative nouns must have relationship with the locations. When you attend to Chinese school to study Mandarin, you may know there are two classifications of locative nouns, first one of which is to indicate the place such as 亚洲, 中国, 北京, 中关村, etc.

It can be also regarded as the institutions and unites in certain places like 学校, 图书馆, 邮局and 银行. However, one thing you should pay attention to is that some nouns can be regarded as locative nouns when they indicate location and places while they can also be treated as ordinary nouns when they indicate the ordinary things. For examples, 学校in the sentence 他们计划明年捐建一百所学校indicates the ordinary thing while that in the sentence我们要去学校上课 implies the location.

In addition, the locative nouns can function as the object of 在、从and到. The students who learn Chinese online free may be told that if you want to indicate a place, you need to use the locative nouns. If you must use non-locative nouns to express the location, you need to add the directional nouns like上, 下, 里and外 or the pronouns 这儿, 那儿, 这里and那里. Some overseas students often make mistakes like 她把照片挂在墙, which should be她把照片挂在墙上.

In order to avoid such kind of mistake, the teachers should pay much attention to correct them properly when they teach Mandarin Chinese. For example, the teachers can teach it by making it becomes the fixed form to strengthen the learning like 把… + 动词 + 在…上/里 or 从 + 某人 + 这儿/那儿+ 动词. For examples, 把书放在桌子上and从朋友那儿借了钱.
