Lesson 9 – Elementary – The Application of “不A也不B”, “搞” and “正在”

After foreign learners studied some useful expressions in Chinese language, they should be able to express them in daily life, which is the final goal of learning a certain language. Therefore, students learn Chinese in China should pay more attention to the frequently used expressions.

The first one should be discussed is the phrase “不(bù)A也不(yě bù)B”, which means “not A and not B either”. Students study Chinese should know that this phrase is often used to describe objects or things of the moderate.

Here are some examples to help them learn Mandarin by understanding the meaning of this phrase:
① 大卫不高也不矮。(dà wèi bù ɡāo yě bù ǎi)
② 张胜不胖也不瘦。(zhānɡ shènɡ bú pànɡ yě bú shòu)
③ 今天不冷也不热。(jīn tiān bù lěnɡ yě bú rè)
④ 那个地方不远也不近。(nà ɡè dì fɑnɡ bù yuǎn yě bú jìn)

Another point to be learned is the character “搞(ɡǎo)” in Chinese, which is very popular in oral Chinese. Students who want to learn Chinese language better should pay more attention to this character because it has several meanings such as “to carry out something or do something not so pleasing”, “to be engaged in a certain type of work” as well as “to manage to get something”.

Let’s explain the meaning separately to help students study in China to tell them apart, avoiding the incorrect usage. The following sentences carry the meaning of “to carry out something or do something not so pleasing”:
① 这个工作他搞得很好。(zhè ɡe ɡōnɡ zuò tā ɡǎo dé hěn hǎo)
② 你搞错了。(nǐ ɡǎo cuò le)
③ 这个搞得他很不开心。(zhè ɡe ɡǎo dé tā hěn bù kāi xīn)
④ 工作搞得他很累。(ɡōnɡ zuò ɡǎo dé tā hěn lèi).

For the meaning of “to be engaged in a certain type of work”, the examples should be like this:
① 他是搞电脑的。(tā shì ɡǎo diàn nǎo de)
② 他是搞销售的。(tā shì ɡǎo xiāo shòu de).
Teachers in Mandarin learning courses often use the following examples to explain the meaning of “to manage to get something”:
① 他搞到很多好东西。(tā ɡǎo dào hěn duō hǎo dōnɡ xi)
② 太饿了,去搞点儿吃的东西吧。(tài è le , qù ɡǎo dián ér chī de dōnɡ xi bɑ)”.

Last but not least, the word will be learned in this essay is “正在(zhènɡ zài)”, which carry the meaning of “in the process of doing something”. So when we use this word, we should ensure that the context is the progressive tenses, which is often stressed by teachers in Chinese language school.

The following examples are stated to teach Mandarin language of this point:
① 美文正在看电视的时候,大卫打来电话。(měi wén zhènɡ zài kàn diàn shì de shí hou , dà wèi dǎ lái diàn huà )
② 我们正在吃饭。(wǒ men zhènɡ zài chī fàn)
③ 他正在看电影。(tā zhènɡ zài kàn diàn yǐnɡ)

However, this is not all about this word. If you go to school to study Mandarin, teacher will tell you another use of this word, that is, to separate the two characters and use either “正” or “在”. This is very important because we use by this way very often in our daily life.

Let’s take some examples that often taken in Mandarin language courses in China for Chinese languagelearners.
① 孩子正(在)睡觉。(hái zi zhènɡ ( zài ) shuì jiào)
② 他(正)在等你。(tā ( zhènɡ ) zài děnɡ nǐ)
③ 我(正)在旅行。(wǒ ( zhènɡ ) zài lǚ xínɡ)

These three words and expressions are very useful in our daily conversation; students should practice more on the basis of understanding the meanings of them.
