International Chinese Language Teaching Is Our Responsibility

With the rapid development of Chinese economy and increasingly improved international status, more and more foreigners begin to study Chinese. In order to make the international Chinese language teaching goes smoothly, every one Chinese people should take the responsibility to do what they can do.

The International society of Chinese language Pedagogy (ISCLP) is an international academic group. Learners who take qualified Mandarin program may know the aim of this group is to promote the theory and practice of teaching Chinese as a second language as well as to promote international exchange and cooperation. At the same time, it will promote international communication and exchange in Chinese language teaching and research

Westerners who study in China may know that the British Council of Culture has established a number of branches all over the world to promote English, putting forward that more than half of the world‘s population speak English by 2015. Special French Union for French promotion has established 1100 branches in 138 countries all over the world. Germany‘s Goethe Institute has opened 128 branches in 76 countries.

The language economy on the basis of language education has become the main source of income in some developed countries. For example, the language industry of Canada takes nine percentage of its total national economy income. Nowadays, more and more foreigners come to learn Mandarin in China because there China becomes more important in the development of the whole world.

With the upgrading of China‘s economic strength, the world-wide Chinese learning become very popular. According to the data published by the Ministry of Education, the total number of overseas Chinese language learners has reached 40 million and still continuously increasing. Teachers in Chinese school in China will tell you that the Chinese language education will also become an important part of the national economy in the future 20 years. There is also tremendous opportunity for the fields of textbooks writing, language testing, software development as well as teachers training.

Just like other economies, the language economy needs to follow the market rules. Therefore, we should fully understand the customers, that is, the Chinese language learners. Only when we understand the needs, learning characteristics, cognitive styles and learning strategies of those who learn Mandarin can we develop market- oriented products to meet the needs of learners.

Traditionally, we increase learners’ interest of learning Mandarin Chinese by providing free teaching materials, teachers as well as schools and classrooms. At present, under the background of fierce international cultural competition, the traditional teaching ways with the planned economy system coloring fails to adapt to the situation of the international Chinese language education.

Chinese language is the unprecedented miracle in human history. It never died out after 5,000 years’ development. And now it becomes the most widely-spoken language in the world. That’s why more and more foreigners come to learn Chinese language in China. The international Chinese language education is not only the biggest market so far, but also a great mission given to educators of our generation.

As the largest international Chinese education academic group, the International society of Chinese language Pedagogy should take the responsibility to promote the development of Chinese language teaching. At the same time, everyone should do what they can to make it goes smoothly.
