How to Use 住口 ?

There are many aspects you need to pay attention when you study Mandarin. Except for the basic words and important grammar points, you need also know some frequently used expressions in daily conversations with Chinese people. 自己来is a common expression to mean it can be done by oneself and it is not necessary to bother the others. Sometimes it is used to ask the guests to help themselves. For example, 这都是些家常便饭,你们不要客气,想吃什么就吃什么,自己来,啊!

When you hear Chinese people say sentence with the patter 总不能…吧like 不想吃也得吃一点儿,总不能饿着吧, they intend to express the meaning of “in any case, it can‘t be…”. When you attend to volunteer programs in China, you may be also hear 真有你的, which is to praise somebody for having capability to do something or being very brave. Sometimes it is ironical. The following dialogue might be helpful. A:昨天我不留神,把一个警察给撞了。B:真有你的!连警察都敢撞!

If you choose watch television series and films to be the main method of learning Chinese language, you may often hear 住口 and  住手, which are easy to understand. The former one is to order somebody to shut up like 住口!你怎么能跟顾客吵架?Sometimes it can also be 住嘴. In the same way, 住手is to order somebody to stop an evil action. For example, 住手!你们别再打了!

In daily life, if you intend to mean it is unworthy of the name or it has not reached a certain degree or amount, you can make sentences with the pattern 这也叫…, for instance, 这也叫图书馆?连工具书搜没有. Another structure that the students who got internships in China should know is 这一…不要紧, … which is to emphasize the latter trouble is caused by a certain action like 这一洗不要紧,衣服缩了两厘米.
