Explaining the Air Tank Yin Zhai from the Standpoint of the Philosophy in Chinese Culture

After you learning Chinese in China, you will know that Yin Zhai in deed refers to the tomb. Its name originates from the concept of Yin and Yang. It is said that the surface of earth is usually called as Yang. On the other hand, the underground is often called as Yin. The house built on the earth for the living human beings is called Yang Zhai. And these we have introduced to those students who study Chinese in China before. What’s more, the tomb built underground is for the death is called as Yin Zhai correspondingly.

During learning Chinese in China, you may have general ideal about the Feng Shui culture in ancient times. For the most of the primitives, they believed that the Feng Shui culture in Chinese culture had represented the filial piety to the ancestors from the successive generations and made it as a good death. What’s more, the death can bless the successive generations with good fortune in the future. On these account, the primitives paid much more attention on the Yin Zhai Feng Shui in Chinese culture than the Yang Zhai Feng Shui. Thus if you study Chinese in China, you will know that Yin Zhai is important for Chinese no matter in ancient times or in modern times.

With learning Chinese in China, you may have learnt something about the ancient livings. In ancient times, some made their livings from observing the Feng Shui for other people. Most of them did business depending on “相墓” (observing the treasure tomb place in Feng Shui culture for the death). The books about Feng Shui which are handed down from ancient generations mainly focus on Zang Jing. When you study Chinese in China, you may have read it before. This is the reason why most of the books about Feng Shui describe the Yin Zhai.

After learning Chinese in China, you will find out that Guo Pu is important to the Feng Shui culture in Chinese culture. In the opening of Zhang Jing which was written by Guo Pu, it has recorded that 葬者,乘生气也。夫阴阳之气,噫而为风,升而为云,降而为雨,行乎地中而为生气。生气行乎地中,发而生乎万物。气感而应,鬼福及人. If you study Chinese in China, you will understand these sentences well. It has described the origin of Qi and it could change in different conditions. What’s more, it has mentioned that the primitives thought the death can protect the living person if they were set in the treasure tomb. In another words, the Qi circulate from the Yin world and Yang world. In deed, the Yin Zhai can be seen as the air tank or the gas piping in order to benefit the future generations.

On the other hand, how to choose the place for constructing this air tank? With study Chinese in China, you will know the air tank refers to Yin Zhai. The Zhang Shui written by Guo Pu has given the answers to it. It is said that 势来形止,是为全气;全气之地,当葬其止. This is the standard to construct the tomb. Generally speaking, it is completely consistent to the philosophical origin of Yang Zhai Feng Shui in Chinese culture. Both of them worship the harmony between man and nature.

As for, whether the remains in the tomb can be “形止气蓄” and “鬼福及人” or not will be criticized by the ancestors and the modern people. Zhang Ju Zheng, the politician in Ming Dynasty, said that most of people who believed in the Feng Shui take the theses from Guo Pu as the standard. However, Guo Pu himself had been killed by other people. He was good at to plan for the other people, while he did not end with a good result. Therefore, if the Yin Zhai Feng Shui really works, that is a question.
