Xishuangbanna Wild Elephant Valley is 19 miles away from Xishuangbanna’s capital city, Jinghong city. It gathers tropical and subtropical forests and wild animal species. It is the center of the exchange and gathering of wild Asian elephants. Among the only more than 300 wild elephants in China, there are about 250 wild elephants and about 40 wild elephant families who have been active in the area around the wild elephant valley for a long time. That is why this valley is named Wild Elephant Valley.

Jinuo Village is located in Jinuo Township, east of Jinghong City, 17 miles away from Jinghong City. It is the place where the Jinuo people have lived for generations. Mountain Jinuo is also one of the famous tea mountains in Yunnan that produce high-quality Pu’er tea. The Dai people originally came from the Baiyue group, who moved toward the south from the Central Plains. In the process of migrating to the south, the ceramic culture of the Central Plains spread to Xishuangbanna.

Until today, the craftsmanship of the Dai people’s slow-wheel pottery production has been well preserved, retaining the appearance of the civilization of the Central Plains more than 4,000 years ago.

Most of the population in Xishuangbanna believes in Theravada Buddhism, introduced in Sri Lanka in the middle of the 7^th century. The Buddhist temple architecture is integrated with the lives of the residents.

Many festivals are related to Theravada Buddhism, such as the Songkran Festival. This festival is the Dai Group New Year, celebrated every April according to the Dai calendar. Dai people will hold various activities, such as the water cleaning ceremony for the Buddha sculpture and a water splashing event to send the best wish for the new year.

The inhabitants of Xishuangbanna are mainly Dai people, and Dai-flavored cuisine enjoys a high reputation in Yunnan Province. The most representative of Dai cuisine is the Grilled Fish with Lemongrass.

This dish has two characteristics: the grill used to fix the fish is the local green bamboo slices. When the fish is grilled over an open fire, both the good smell of the fish meat and the fragrance of the bamboo blend; the other one is the lemongrass used in the cooking, which brings a peculiar smell to this dish.
